Our lovely new Owner’s Event Co-ordinator, Kathryn Arbuckle, over at Lakeland Holiday Park has been able to have a sit down with the author Anne Heward. Anne writes the Sam and Sophie books which take inspiration from her own dogs. The stories take the reader through a series of different adventures and includes many other animals, ranging from birds to soldier ants and even a hermit crab. Not only that, she is a holiday home owner at Lakeland. Let’s find out a little bit more about Anne!
Where are you from?
I am originally from Dewsbury but I now live in Huddersfield and of course my second home is Lakeland!
What made you start writing?
I wrote my first book in 2009. I am inspired by what I see around me and living in a little village you will be surprised with all the funny things that happen. Once I was walking the dogs and we came across a farmer with all his cows in the middle of the road, we ended up having to help a whole herd them!
Do you ever write here at Lakeland?
Yes, sometimes. If something happens that I think will make a good story I write it down. I fact once I was in my caravan and I heard this strange noise. It was very loud, so I opened the door to see what was happening and I found my neighbour in her caravan doing the exact same thing. Then all of a sudden a herd of deer came past us! It was surreal! That story made into one of my books!
Tell us about your latest book.
Well it is a collection of 10 stories. Stories all about Sam and Sophie my dogs. They go on lots of adventures and meet lots of other animals such as badgers, toads, birds, ducks, sheep and pigs! Kevin the Crow also makes lots of appearances! With my books, dog lovers can really relate to them and kids just love animals.
What are Sam and Sophie like?
Sam was brave and bold and always in trouble! Sophie was sweet, gentle and kind. Everyone in the village loved Sophie. Villagers would say “Oooooh hello Sophie!!!” and give her lots of attention and then notice Sam and say “Oh. Hi Sam” and then carry on their day!
What is your next project?
Well I am working on my third book at the moment and I have plans on trying to make my books a children’s television series. That would just be wonderful.
What is the best thing you have ever done?
I once took a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon. Then we stopped and had a champagne picnic right in the middle of it! I recommend everyone to do it!
