We love BBC Children in Need here at Haven, so much so that we are aiming to raise a mammoth £300,000 this year! Since our last update in June we have managed to raise another £125,000 and we still have much more to come. So we asked Johnny (you can also read a little interview with him below, to find out what he does for BBC Children in Need) to take you on our Children in Need journey since June…
What have we been up to for BBC Children in Need?
There has been a whole array of fun, crazy and wonderful activities taking place across the parks to help raise money for Children in Need. We have had the hugely popular RockleyFest ’14, selling over 1,000 tickets in advance, Thorpe Park’s Golf Day raised a swinging (I couldn’t think of a better golfing term) £4,000, Berwick’s Show Bar Team have managed to raise over £2,000 with a balloon popping competition with great prizes and we had a fantastic Charity Sunday at Devon Cliffs which took their fundraising total to over £10,000!
Our last update mentioned the Allhallows 2,000 mile challenge, well; it was a closely fought race with the car and bike battling for pole position for the majority of the journey. I can now announce that the car narrowly beat the bike by only 72 miles. But the best of news is that they managed to raise £1,200 for BBC Children in Need! Over the coming weeks I will give you a more in-depth look at some of our parks fundraising stories, so stay tuned.
What’s happening at the moment?
Two of our parks, Riviere and Perran Sands, have teamed up and are powering through a 444 mile coastal sports challenge. This challenge involves all manner of different activities including cycling, kayaking, swimming, skydiving, running and even paddle boarding. They are fully utilising the strong community spirit on park by getting owners involved with all the events – so far they have raised a huge £17,900 towards their £25,000 target!
What’s coming up?
We have some serious sporting challenges coming up soon! Over here at Haven HQ our half marathon-ers have been eating up pavement and training in all weathers. As D-Day draws closer (only a month to go!) they are making sure they are as ready as possible for the run of a lifetime. Having already raised £620 they are making tracks towards their target! Alongside this up at Craig Tara, two of the team – Neil and Angus, are taking on the Great Scottish Run on the 5th October.
From Hafan Y Mor we have Calvin and Shaun, two of our FunStars, taking on the notoriously difficult 3 peaks challenge. We wish them the best of luck and I will let you know all about this challenge in our next update. We also have lots of fun activities taking place at Haggerston Castle with everything from Pudsey breakfasts to FunStar face painting and lots more!
Behind the scenes with Johnny!
How long have you worked for Haven?
I interned in the Publicity Team for a month during between May and June which then resulted in being offered a permanent position which I started in August. I am now in my sixth week and loving it!
What did you do before joining the company?
Before joining Haven I studied History and French at the University of Kent, this included a year abroad at the University of Poitiers in France. Inbetween finishing my degree and starting at Haven I dabbled in Secondary History teaching for 6 months but the world of PR and charity events was too strong to resist!
What is your role at Haven?
My job role is called Publicity Assistant and this covers all manner of different tasks. My main focus is on regional PR and searching out fantastic and intriguing stories from around all our Haven Parks. This is combined with managing all things TripAdvisor to see what all you lovely people are saying about the parks you visit. Finally, I help co-ordinate Children in Need events over here at Hemel Hempstead and support fundraising events across all the parks. All in all, I can get myself involved in all manner of different tasks and events which means that every day is different and exciting!
What are you most looking forward to working at Haven?
I am looking forward to visiting as many of the parks as possible to find out what people enjoy most about Haven. I cannot wait to find captivating and interesting stories from across the parks and share them with as many people as possible! Alongside this I am really excited to be involved with the Children in Need events and I have my eyes set on helping us reaching our £300,000 target.
Finally seeing as BBC Children in Need has just officially launched for 2014, can you let us know which celebrity cake team you are supporting?
I have actually had to give this some serious thought to this as I absolutely love cake in all its forms, but I have managed to come to the decision that I am supporting Grimmy’s #TeamChocolateCake. Let the baking begin!
