The Blue Flag awards were announced and we can’t wait to show off our beautiful Blue Flag beaches near our parks.
Did you know that we now have more Blue Flag beaches in the UK than Mexico and Cyprus – impressive!
What are the Blue Flag beach awards?
‘The Blue Flag is a prestigious, international award scheme which acts as a guarantee to tourists that a beach they are visiting is one of the best in the world.’ (source keepbritaintidy.org) It is awarded annually and is valid for only one year.
In order for beaches to be awarded with the Blue flag award they have to meet a number of standards, including ‘Water Quality’, ‘Safety and Services’ and ‘Environmental Management’.
The 2015 list of Blue Flag beaches includes 10 beaches which are less than one mile away from our Haven parks. We are delighted that 2 of those beaches are owned by Haven (Sandy Bay at Devon Cliffs and Lydstep Beach in South Wales)
Sandy Bay, a beautiful beach at the heart of Devon runs for half a mile with golden sands, red sandstone cliffs and sensational views ideal for families. The Red Stone cliffs at Sandy Bay are among the oldest along the Jurassic Coast by approximately 240 million years old, perfect for a history lesson with the kids.
The award winning South Tenby offers a two mile stretch of golden sands where you can enjoy a stroll along the beach, rounders with the family or an ice cream whilst looking out towards Caldey Island. If you want to view the beach from a different perspective jump onto a boat to Caldey Islands to see how many puffins and seals you can spot.
A peaceful and non- commercialised environment can be experienced at Sutton on Sea, just 3 miles from our Golden Sands Holiday park.
The selection of colourful beach huts along the promenade and rows of benches overlooking the sea offers a relaxing hotspot. On the other hand if you feel like getting active (work off those fish and chips you had the night before) then you can find cycle routes along the beach.
Owned by Haven, Lydstep Beach has both sand and pebbles and is backed by impressive wooded cliffs at either end. It offers a range of water sports and also is one of the few beaches in the area where you can launch your own boat.
TADAA…. We have a new beach added to our impressive selection of award winning beaches which are close to our Haven Parks. Porthminster Beach which is 6 miles from our Riviere Sands Park boasts crescents of golden sand and glittering bays so come along and see for yourselves. Just a short walk away and you can spend your day visiting St Ives or get lost in the tropical illusion of Porthminster Beach when you are blessed with good weather. The views you can admire whilst staring into the distance stretch from St Ives Bay as far as Godrevy Lighthouse.
Don’t let the name fool you, it’s not all black rocks at this Blue Flag beach in fact you will find an area of sand backed by dunes at the northern edge of the mouth of Tremadog Bay.
You can drive onto the beach here – so it’s a popular spot not just for picnickers and sandcastle builders, but also for motor boats and water bikes which have a special zone for their use.
There are numerous rock pools which are perfect for exploring as they are teaming with marine life!
