It’s time for another Challenge Haven and we’re going ‘flippin’ crazy over Pancake day!
We set Helen and Johnny the challenge of flipping as many pancakes as they can in one minute and believe us things got a bit messy but before we get to the challenge we thought we’d ‘batter’ share the history of Pancake Day and how to make the perfect pancake …
Why do we celebrate Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday)?
Shrove Tuesday or Pancake day as it is more commonly known now, is the day before the first day of Lent. We use up the ingredients in our cupboards before giving up something for 40 days. Many people give up chocolate, alcohol or naughty food!
Will you be giving anything up for lent?
Fun fact! You may hear our Welsh parks say “Dydd Mawrth Ynyd” which is welsh for Pancake Tuesday!
How to make the perfect pancake!
They may seem simple with only 3 key ingredients but we promise there is a way to prefect the pancake.
What will you need?
100g Plain flour
Butter (for the pan)
Pour 100g of flour into a bowl
Measure 300ml of milk and add to the bowl
Add two eggs
Mix altogether until there are no lumps
Heat up a frying pan and melt a spoonful of butter around the edges
Add a ladle spoon of mixture
Now this is the tricky bit!
Keep an eye on your mixture making sure it isn’t sticking to the sides
When the mixture in nearly cooked through it’s time for the flip!
It’s all in the wrist! A quick small flip for beginners
Cook the other side of the pancake until golden brown and flip again
Slide out of the pan and add a topping of your choice!
Easy, peasy lemon squeezy!
Now for the challenge!
The rules were simple – flip as many pancakes as you could in one minute. The current Guinness World Record is held by Australian celebrity chef Brad Jolly, who has the impressive score of 140 flips in 60 seconds – do you think our Haven challengers can beat this?
