Exciting Outdoor Activities Near You in 2016

If you’re visiting one of our parks, step into the local area and experience some of the great activities on offer! We’ve had a look at some of the best outdoor activities in the areas around our parks that we think you would love to try!

Scotland

Are you an adrenaline seeker? Are you looking for an exciting challenge and not afraid to get a bit wet in the process? White Water Rafting is an exciting, thrill seeking activity and can be experienced all year round in Scotland. Paddle downstream in one of Scotland’s many rivers and experience the dips, drops and rapids that come along the way! There are different levels of difficulty going from a more gentle grade 1 to a more extreme grade 6 so the whole family can get involved!

Northumberland

The Farne Islands is a fantastic place to spot nature in Northumberland. Around 23 different types of birds can be found flying around the island including eider ducks, puffins, guillemots and razorbills! Look out on the rocks for grey and Atlantic seals, or spot them bobbing in the sea! If the weathers nice, why not take a boat trip from the Seahouses and enjoy the sea views. There are plenty of different things to do on the Island including horse riding, cycling, golf, rock-climbing and paint-balling so you won’t be short of things to keep your family entertained!

Yorkshire

Want to feel like you’re on top of the world? Well you can be with Go Ape in Yorkshire, well, at least on top of the treetops! Bring out your inner Tarzan by climbing across walkways, soaring down zip lines and do the leap of faith on the Tarzan swing! You’ll also get the best view from the top of the treetops so take a moment to take it all in! Go Ape is fun for all the family and the little ones can get involved with Go Ape Tree Top Junior too. If swinging between the trees doesn’t tire you out you can also zip around the forest on a segway!

The Lakes

If you’re camping in the Lake District take a trip to the Lake District Visitor Centre. The Lake District Visitor Centre has many activities to choose from but the one that really stood out to us was Treetop Nets! If you’re looking for a bit of an adventure then how about climbing across 1,500 metres of giant nets, walkways, trampolines, slides and tunnels between the trees 9 metres off the ground! Treetop Nets is perfect for families and anyone aged 3 and above can have a go! How daring are you?

Blackpool

Blackpool Pleasure Beach is a must see for any thrill seekers out there! Blackpool Pleasure Beach will definitely be an exciting day out with around 125 different rides, attractions and shows to choose between! Kids will love Nickelodeon Land where they will get to see some of their favourite characters including SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer and Rugrats! There is something for all the family meaning you can spend some quality time together and have a fantastic day out. And the best thing is if you visit on a weekend before 20th March wristbands are half price!

Lincolnshire

If you’re in Lincolnshire and looking for something to do outdoors, take a visit to Cleethorpes Discovery Centre and Boating Lake. You can spend your time anyway you want whether that’s building the biggest sandcastle in the sandpit, having a splash around in the paddling pool or taking a stroll around the lake to feed the ducks! You can also take to the water and hire out a pedalo or rowing boat!

North Wales 

Snowdonia is a must see for anyone in North Wales. With beautiful landscapes, Snowdonia is perfect for hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, touring and sightseeing. There are plenty of water sports and extreme activities to take part in too all in the perfect setting! Travel like our ancestors did back in 1896 and take the whole family on the vintage steam train that climbs to the highest peaks in Wales! Here you will get the best views of the mountain so be sure to bring your camera!

South Wales

If you’re in the south of Wales then why not try something a bit different and go dolphin spotting! A boat trip is a perfect family activity that is fun for all ages! As you head downstream, you will pass many sites such as the ruins of an Iron Age settlement, Castell Batch, the largest cliff in Ceredigion and the village of Llangranog.  You will also get the chance to spot bird colonies, seals, bottle nosed dolphins and porpoise! If you are lucky you may also spot a sea turtle too!

Norfolk

Are you feeling brave? If so give Dinosaur Adventure in Norfolk a go! There are plenty of outdoor activities to keep your little ones entertained! Watch their faces fill with excitement as they spot dinosaurs in the woods along the dinosaur trail! Have a game of Jurassic Putt Crazy Golf, find your way through the maze home to the dinosaurs, enjoy Raptor Races and go wild in the adventure play area!

Essex

Teach your kids a new skill at Essex Outdoors! With four centres throughout Essex you will never be far from an exciting outdoor activity. So whether they want to try rock-climbing, power boating, quad-biking, canoeing, crabbing, high ropes and much more there will be a fully qualified member of staff on hand to teach them a new skill and help them find love for a new sport! They can also learn how to work as a team in the Raft Building, Team Challenge & Problem Solving, and Orienteering & Map Skills activities!

Kent

Diggerland in Kent is a fantastic family day out. The unique theme park is great for adults and children alike, giving you the chance to drive and operate real diggers, dumpers and other construction machinery! With digger related rides, go karts, indoor and outdoor play areas and sandpits there is something for all the family. Give your little ones the chance to get behind the wheel in the mini land rovers and robots!

Somerset

Explore the largest gorge in Britain at the Cheddar Gorge in Somerset. Look out at spectacular views from the lookout tower and begin the 3 mile walk enjoying the breathtaking views as you go! Venture underground and experience the fascinating caves, follow the Crystal Quest and enjoy the mirror pools and fountains! If you’re feeling brave give Adventure Caving a go and squeeze between gaps in the caves, or give rock climbing a try!

Sussex

Chichester canal is a great place to get outdoors with the family, stretch your legs and get some fresh air. Take a stroll around the canal, go on a boat trip or give canoeing a try! Rent a canoe to explore the canal or jump in a rowing boat that can fit all the family in! Enjoy stunning views of the cathedral and the South Downs as you paddle through the water.

Dorset

Why not try something totally new and learn how to ski or snowboard in Dorset! The dry slope at Snowtrax is perfect for complete beginners to learn on or those just wishing to improve their skills. You can also whizz down the slope in the ringos or try out a ski-bob! And if you haven’t managed to tire the little ones out on the slopes, take them to the Alpine Adventure Park which has an overhead cable ride, rope swings, trampolines, wooden bridges and a mini fort for toddlers!

Cornwall

Enjoy the great outdoors in all its glory at the Eden Project in Cornwall. Wander through the Rainforest Biome and experience four of the world’s rainforest environments: Tropical Island, Tropical South America, Southeast Asia and West Africa. Enjoy stunning views amongst the treetops on the Canopy Walkway, look out at the magnificent waterfall and see if you can spot the bananas and everyone’s favourite beans – cocoa and chocolate growing at the top of the trees! The Eden Project makes for a fun and educational day out that everyone in the family can enjoy.

Devon

How about a visit to see the adoption donkeys at The Donkey Sanctuary in Devon! You can have a meet and greet with the donkeys, have a look around the Wild Sanctuary and the Nature Centre, go on a walking trail, find your way through the maze or try your luck in the treasure hunts! With lots to do you’ll be surprised to hear that it’s free to enter, although donations to the charity are welcome.
