When wanting to start the process of buying a second hand caravan it can be an exciting but admittedly, slightly daunting task. At Haven we know this so we have put together this handy starter guide about the first steps you need to get on the roadof Holiday Home ownership. This guide is just a brief introduction to the steps of owning but it’s a good place to start and if after you read this guide you want some more in-depth information you can read our guide to buying a second-hand caravan. But let’s get you started by checking out the first things you should do to get yourself on the way to ownership…
1. Choose a park
Here at Haven we have 35 different parks, located up and down the UK coastline (and one that is slightly woodier!) With this many to choose from it’s a good idea to narrow the search down by asking which region you’d like to be your home from home. Think about the type of scenery you’d like, your preferred distance from home and what there is to do in the area around the park. After all, the park you pick should be a place you’ll want to come back to again and again. Plus think about whose coming, including the dog!
We have 32 parks that accept your four-legged friends, it’s important every single family member is happy!
2. Find the right caravan for you
How many bedrooms do you need? Do you want a large living room for socialising? What about environmentally-friendliness? Maybe you want something really stylish. Who will be coming with you? These are all things you’ll need to think about when you’re trying to decide which caravan is right for you.
Get an idea of what’s available by browsing pre-owned holiday homes online. You can search by region, price or even driving time to find something that’s perfect for you in the location you want.
3. Decide your budget
Some companies are afraid to talk about budgets and the money needed to enjoy a holiday home but we want to ensure our owners know exactly how much their new purchase will be. Here at Haven we ask for a deposit of 20% or £3,000 deposit on a pre-owned caravan – whichever is greater.
You will also need to budget for the monthly repayments, running costs and annual site fees. Also, it’s something many people do forget, you will need to think about the travel costs to and from the park, because as we all know – petrol isn’t cheap! If you’re going to have to spend a lot of money on petrol to drive hundreds of miles to the park, you could always ask to if there is a park closer to you that have the facilities that you need.
4. Go on a park visit
When you’ve narrowed down your choices, go on a park visit. To arrange your visit you can call one of our team on 0800 0510 7402, who can help answer any extra questions you may have or you can book online.
Park visits can take as long or as little time as you have to spare. The Advisor will really want to know what it is you’re wanting from Holiday Home Ownership, as well as the other members of the family. After all this is your day and we want to make sure you get everything you want out of it.
The Advisor will show you and your family around the park; round the facilities and pitches, where ever you fancy! Plus have a nose around the range of show home caravan’s that we have on site. This will help you get a good feel of what to expect. Afterwards take some time to wander around and enjoy the park for the rest of the day – soaking up the atmosphere as if you were a true owner. And just in case you think you might buy on the day, remember to bring along your passport or driving licence, proof of address and your deposit.
