We are mad about beaches at Haven, which does make sense as we are Britain’s favourite Seaside Holiday! However, we may have some competition from the guys and gals who decide which beaches deserve the prestigious award of A Blue Flag– lucky for us Haven has 26 Beaches near our Parks who have just that!
What is the Blue Flag award?
‘The Blue Flag is a prestigious, international award scheme which acts as a guarantee to tourists that a beach they are visiting is one of the best in the world.’ (source keepbritaintidy.org) It is awarded annually and is valid for only one year which makes it even more special.
So as you can see, it’s a pretty big deal and we really want to make a fuss of it!
But what is it that these beaches need to have?
The beaches have to pass numerous standards, including ‘Water Quality’, ‘Safety and Services’ and ‘Environmental Management.’ These strict guidelines mean that only the best beaches manage to achieve this prestigious award! This week the list was released and Haven are pleased to announce that out of the 94 beaches that made the grade we have 18 parks near these seaside delights, with 11 parks less than one mile away, and eight of those eleven have direct access!
We are even more proud to announce that Haven actually own two of these award-winning beauties – Sandy Bay at Devon Cliffs and Lydstep Beach in South Wales.
We asked our intern Johnny to share our top pick of Blue Flag beaches with you! Even more exciting is that you can access these beaches straight from the park:
There’s something about Sandy!
Sandy Bay, at the end of the Jurassic Coast in Devon, has impressive red cliffs and miles of sandy beach where you can walk in the footsteps of dinosaurs! Perfect for a stroll with the dog followed by a Devon cream tea at Haven’s South Beach Cafe. Having a Blue Flag means that it is perfect for families to enjoy the surroundings care-free!
Step on up to Lydstep!
Lydstep Beach has both sand and pebbles and is backed by impressive wooded cliffs at either end. It offers a range of water sports and also is one of the few beaches in the area where you can launch your own boat! Haven offers a five-star booking service on this park giving you the opportunity to choose your holiday home and its location on the park. This means you can secure the best sea views of this award-winning beach!
Ten out ten for Tenby!
A mile and a half long, dune-backed with playground this beach is a true jewel of the Welsh Coast and has direct access from our Kiln Park . There’s plenty of space at the Tenby end for families with rock pools, safe bathing with a lifeguard on duty and a short walk into Tenby with its cafes and restaurants! If you want to take on some challenging activities, such as windsurfing and sea angling, then head east along the beach!
If anywhere can clear your thoughts it’s Cleethorpes Beach!
At Thorpe Park you can visit this traditional sandy beach with a pier and beach huts. There are a huge variety of activities including donkey rides, swimming, windsurfing, canoeing, sailing and jet skiing. Why not pop along to Mablethorpe on 13 – 14 September for the Bathing Beauties Beach Hut Festival! If you can pull yourself away from the range of activities on offer the promenade boasts beautiful award-winning gardens.
There’s no up and down at the Central Beach!
This award-winning beach has direct access from our Golden Sands Holiday Park. We even named our park after the glorious long sandy beach just over the dunes! The soft golden sands are, in places, backed by vibrant grassy sand dunes. The flat terrain makes it super easy for everyone to get around! So why not take a 20-minute stroll along this award-winning coastline to the lovely town of Mablethorpe!
Leave the car behind and enjoy some wonderful walks around Carbis Bay!
Our Rivere Sands Park sits on a short stretch of cliff that gently slopes down to the perfect white sands and turquoise ocean that makes up this wonderful beach! As Cornwall is one of the best places in the country for surfing and paddle boarding we offer lessons and equipment hire on the park! Furthermore, whilst here why not go across the bay and visit the beautiful and stylish St.Ives. And of course, we can fully recommend the cream teas and much more at our Cornish-style café!
It’s the golden sand that rocks at this beach! – Morfa Bychan (Black Rock Sands)
This area of North Wales is ideal for adventurous coastal walks and beautiful natural wildlife. Black Road Sands is far from black instead it has a golden glow which has helped regain the Blue Flag award for another year. You can drive onto the beach here – so it’s a popular spot not just for picnickers and sandcastle builders, but also for motorboats and water bikes which have a special zone for their use! There are numerous rock pools which are perfect for exploring as they are teeming with marine life! It is a truly stunning backdrop for any holiday!
The key to a wonderful beach definitely has to be in New Quay
Our Quay West Holiday Park has full access to this golden delight of the Welsh Coast. Traeth yr Harbwr (Harbour Beach) is patrolled by RNLI lifeguards during the summer months and the swimming area is often shared by the local bottlenose dolphins! During August there is the unmissable annual Cardigan Bay Regatta which and dates back to the 1870s! There are numerous activities including sailing and dinghy competitions as well as inshore swimming and rowing events.
Don’t hang out with just Craig and Tara, come down to the beach!
Although Scotland has not been awarded any Blue Flag beaches this year we still believe that their coastline has some wonderful hidden gems! The beach onto the Firth of Clyde is only 2 minutes from Craig Tara Park! Here you will find amazing views of the Isle of Arran and the most spectacular sunsets. You can enjoy a meal with a sea view in our recently refurbished bar and restaurant, The Brigs of Ayr. However, if you are feeling adventurous a walk-up Brown Carrick hill can be well worth the effort for fantastic views on a clear day!
